The Palm Beach Story (Criterion Collection)

This wild tale of wacky wedlock from PRESTON STURGES (The Lady Eve) takes off like a rocket and never lets up. JOEL MCCREA (Sullivan’s Travels) and CLAUDETTE COLBERT (It Happened One Night) play Tom and Gerry, a married New York couple on the skids, financially and romantically. With Tom hot on her trail, Gerry takes off for Florida on a mission to solve the pair’s money troubles, which she accomplishes in a highly unorthodox manner. A mix of the witty and the utterly absurd, The Palm Beach Story is a high watermark of Sturges’s brand of physical comedy and verbal repartee, featuring sparkling performances from its leads as well as hilarious supporting turns from RUDY VALLEE and MARY ASTOR as a brother and a sister ensnared in Tom and Gerry’s high jinks. Special Edition Features: New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray New interview with writer and film historian James Harvey about director Preston Sturges New interview with actor and comedian Bill Hader about Sturges Safeguarding Military Information, a 1942 World War II propaganda short written by Sturges Screen Guild Theater radio adaptation of the film from March 1943 PLUS: An essay by critic Stephanie Zacharek

Eureka Entertainment to release Otto Preminger’s LAURA, a psychologically complex and well-crafted murder mystery, on Blu-ray from 14 January 2019. The only question about Laura is whether it's simply one of the greatest film noir releases ever made, or if it's indeed the quintessential film noir. Decide for yourself. This 1944 murder mystery classic from director Otto Preminger (replacing a fired Rouben Mamoulian) has only grown in stature over the years, with its hypnotic mixture of doomed romantic obsession, dizzying intrigue, and fatalistic cynicism marking it as essential noir. Police detective Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) is drawn into Manhattan high society as he investigates the death of stunning ad exec Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney), apparently shotgunned in her own apartment. The slithery suspects are numerous, led by effete, snobbish columnist Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), and Laura's philandering fiancé Shelby (Vincent Price), who's also been cavorting with Laura's wealthy aunt (Judith Anderson). McPherson begins to fall in love with Laura through a portrait in her home and the memories relayed by those who knew her…just as it becomes apparent that even the basic facts of the case might not be what they seemed. Peppered with eternally quotable dialogue ( I should be sincerely sorry to see my neighbours' children devoured by wolves. ) and sumptuous, Oscar-winning cinematography by Joseph LaShelle, Laura stands with The Big Sleep and Double Indemnity as one of the classic noir titles, and an undeniable American masterpiece. BLU-RAY SPECIAL FEATURES: 1080p presentation on Blu-ray of both the extended and original theatrical versions of the film LPCM mono Audio Optional English SDH subtitles Audio commentary by composer David Raksin and film professor Jeanine Basinger Audio commentary by film historian Rudy Behlmer Laura: The Lux Radio Theater broadcasts – Two radio adaptations of Laura from 1945 [59 mins] and 1954 [57 mins], starring Dana Andrews, Gene Tierney and Vincent Price in the 1945 version, and Gene Tierney and Victor Mature in the 1954 version Laura: The Screen Guild Theater broadcast – Adaptation of Laura from radio anthology series, The Screen Guild Theater, originally aired in 1945 [30 mins], starring Dana Andrews, Gene Tierney and Clifton Webb Laura: The Ford Theater broadcast – A further radio adaptation of Laura from 1948, starring Virginia Gilmore and John Larkin A Tune for Laura: David Raksin Remembers – an archival interview with the renowned composer The Obsession – an archival featurette on Laura Deleted Scene PLUS: A collector’s booklet featuring a new essay by Phil Hoad, alongside a selection of rare archival imagery

A Raisin In The Sun - The Criterion Collection
Bestseller
21,99 € *
zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

The classic film version of Lorraine Hansberry’s revelatory drama—starring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee—newly restored. LORRAINE HANSBERRY’s A Raisin in the Sun was the first play by a black woman to be on Broadway and is now an immortal part of the theatrical canon. Two years after its premiere, the production came to the screen, directed by DANIEL PETRIE. The original stars—including SIDNEY POITIER (In the Heat of the Night) and RUBY DEE (Do the Right Thing)—reprise their roles as members of an African American family living in a cramped Chicago apartment, in this deeply resonant tale of dreams deferred. Following the death of their patriarch, the Youngers await a life insurance check they hope will change their circumstances, but tensions arise over how best to use the money. Vividly rendering Hansberry’s intimate observations on generational conflict and housing discrimination, Petrie’s film captures the high stakes, shifting currents, and varieties of experience within black life in mid‐century America. Features: New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack Interview from 1961 with playwright and screenwriter Lorraine Hansberry New interview with Imani Perry, author of Looking for Lorraine, on the real‐life events on which the play is based Episode of Theater Talk from 2002 featuring producer Philip Rose and actors Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis Excerpt from The Black Theatre Movement: From “A Raisin in the Sun” to the Present, a 1978 documentary, with a new introduction by director Woodie King Jr. New interview with film scholar Mia Mask, editor of Poitier Revisited Trailer PLUS: An essay by scholar Sarita Cannon

The Gun for Hire (Eureka Classics)
Top-Produkt
18,49 € *
zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

One of the most revered film noir hits of the 1940s, This Gun for Hire was also the debut teaming of Veronica Lake, in one of her sultriest and most iconic roles, and Alan Ladd. Following the success of the film, the duo would go on to team up in several more features, although This Gun for Hire remains their most fondly remembered pairing. Ladd – as a frightening yet oddly sympathetic hit man – was only fourth-billed in this defining early noir, yet it became the breakout role that turned him into a star. As The New York Times said of Ladd upon the film's 1942 release, He is really an actor to watch. After this stinging performance, he has something to live up to – or live down. Lake is nightclub chanteuse Ellen, and her police detective boyfriend Michael (Robert Preston) is on the hunt for assassin-for-hire Philip Raven (Ladd), after Raven performed a hit on a chemist with a secret formula and a taste for blackmail. When Raven's employer Gates (Laird Cregar) double crosses him after the job is done, Raven seeks revenge, and his path crosses with Ellen after she is hired to perform at Gates' club. Raven learns that the stolen formula is for a poison gas that is to be sold to the Japanese, and his pangs of conscience – and revelations of his tortured past – turn Ellen's fear into compassion, just as dangerous forces close in on Raven. But Ellen is still unsure if Raven can be trusted... Adapted from Graham Greene's novel, This Gun for Hire is a stylish wartime espionage noir that was actually in the middle of shooting when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entered the war. Lake and Ladd were such a dynamic pairing that Paramount already teamed them again for the same year's adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's The Glass Key before this was even released. In a touch of cinematic irony, The Glass Key had previously been filmed in 1935...by This Gun for Hire director Frank Tuttle (who did not return for the '42 version). Special Features: 1080p presentation on Blu-ray from a 4K scan of the original film elements Uncompressed LPCM 2.0 audio Audio commentary by film scholar Adrian Martin “This Gun for Hire” episode of Lux Radio Theater with the voices of Alan Ladd and Joan Blondell “This Gun for Hire” episode of The Screen Guild Theater with the voices of Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake Theatrical trailer A collector’s booklet featuring new writing by film writer and journalist Barry Forshaw, and film writer Craig Ian Mann

The directorial debut of the great Joseph L Mankiewicz (All About Eve, Suddenly, Last Summer), Dragonwyck is a glorious melding of Gothic chills and baroque melodrama. A beautiful Connecticut farm girl (Gene Tierney) finds herself embroiled in a conspiracy of madness, murder and intrigue after she agrees to become governess and nurse to the family of her distant cousin (Vincent Price). Echoing Hitchcock’s Rebecca (1940), and reuniting stars Tierney and Price for the third time in as many years (having previously starred together in Otto Preminger’s Laura, 1944, and John M Stahl’s Leave Her to Heaven, 1945), Dragonwyck is a magnificently creepy chiller with a career-defining performance by Price, luminous cinematography by the legendary Arthur C Miller, and a wonderful Alfred Newman score. The Bells Of St Mary's
Bestseller

zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

After triumphing at the Academy Awards® (including wins for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor) with the 1944 box office smash Going My Way, director Leo McCarey (Duck Soup) and star Bing Crosby immediately collaborated on the equally successful follow-up, The Bells of St Mary s, presented here in a heavenly 4K restoration. Father Chuck O Malley (Crosby) is dispatched to fix up an inner-city parochial school on its last legs, and his easygoing, unconventional demeanour instantly clashes with that of the firm, no-nonsense Sister Superior Mary Benedict (Ingrid Bergman, fresh off winning the Best Actress Oscar® for Gaslight), who is keeping the school open through sheer will and faith alone. Over the course of the school year, the pair bicker and ultimately bond over their differing visions on how to save the school and the role a miserly businessman (Henry Travers, It s A Wonderful Life) who wants the building condemned might play in doing so. A blockbuster crowdpleaser on its release, The Bells of St Mary s remains just as affecting today, thanks to McCarey s directorial light touch, Crosby s laidback charisma and iconic singing voice, and Bergman s radiant charm, all of which earned them well-deserved Oscar® nominations.
